Home-Start Supporting Parents & Families in and around Leeds
Home-Start Leeds is a voluntary organisation offering both emotional and practical support to families with at least one child under seven in the Leeds area.
We know that being a parent isn’t always easy and that life can bring stress and challenges that get in the way of family life.
Our volunteers from all communities and backgrounds visit parents in their home and develop a supportive relationship to help them to build brighter futures for their children and themselves. Leeds Skyrack Lions provided a donation which will help us provide essential household items for Leeds families struggling with the ‘Cost of Living Crisis’ – in particular as winter approaches we will have requests for curtains, and items to keep the home warm.
Home-Start is a local community network of trained volunteers and expert support helping families with young children through their challenging times. We are there for parents when they need us the most because childhood can’t wait.
The Home-Start approach is as individual as the people we’re helping. No judgement, it is just compassionate, confidential help and expert support.
St George’s Crypt – Leeds Based Award Winning Homeless Charity
In September 2023 we provided some repeat support to this important City of Leeds charity working with the homeless, the vulnerable and those suffering from addiction. They aim to:
- To meet the basic needs of everyone in a safe, non-judgmental and caring environment.
- To support people who are living on the streets into finding accommodation.
- To help people gain skills and confidence so that they can take an active role in their futures.
- To be good stewards of all that we receive in an open and transparent manner.
- To enable people to make positive choices in their lifestyle by accessing employment and freedom from addiction.
- To engage with local communities by identifying opportunities to share the Crypt’s resources.
- To find the most appropriate solutions by creating effective partnerships across the city.
Leeds & Skyrack Lions Helps Candlelighters Leeds
Leeds Skyrack Lions Club along with the valued support from the Enterprise Foundation have again provided support to Candlelighters, who support families facing children’s cancer in Yorkshire. They get involved in all sorts of different projects to help ordinary families who are facing challenging family difficulties.
Lions Help Martin House Hospice
Local Lions Clubs, including Leeds & Skyrack Lions Club, in have provided an amazing £44,000 for Martin House Hospice to fund a new Sanctuary Garden Project. This will help create a semi-private landscaped garden, located outside The Sanctuary, where our bereavement counselling takes place. This tranquil and peaceful space will allow our families to take further time together following their sessions. We can’t wait to start work and create a very special place for remembrance and reflection.
Donation to Leeds Homestart to help and support young families in need

We all know that being a parent isn’t always easy and that life can bring stress and challenges that get in the way of family life.
Support is provided to parents in their home and develop a supportive relationship to help them to build brighter futures for their children whatever the community or backgrounds.
Leeds and Skyrack Lions have supported Home-Start leeds for many years so that they can provide appropriate families with weekly support and practical goods such as Easter and Christmas hampers, toys at Christmas, baby equipment and a variety of emergency supplies.
UKRAINE REFUGEE RELIEF LEEDS & SKYRACK LIONS DONATE
Lions around the world are responding to the growing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, and as of today over £100,000 has been raised by 1000 UK clubs and International Grants.
The grants have been issued to the Lions of:
- Poland,
- Hungary,
- Romania,
- Ukraine,
- the Slovak Republic/Czech Republic
As the refugees move further into Europe, Lions are welcoming numerous refugees and they will be supported locally by the Lions Clubs on the ground and the Lions Clubs International Foundation’s Designated Grants for Refugees. (LCIF)
Support for Ukraine Refugees – Initially Leeds &S kyrack Lions Club have made a donation of £500.00 from our reserve funds . With the number of Lions clubs in the UK approaching 1,000 we are likely to create a sizeable pool just from the UK alone. Lions are the largest international voluntary group in terms of membership and direct aid to where it is needed through local clubs who have identified specific needs following a disaster or humanitarian crisis.
The benefits of working through local clubs is that being a community based structure it is well placed to identify gaps in services and respond rapidly and effectively to areas of need. Local Lions clubs can also ensure that all efforts are targeted directly without any third party involvement. At a higher level LCIF can provide assistance and direction by coordinating our local response to ensure that there is little duplication of government or NGO activity. In addition, complications such as delivery of goods that are not in short supply or managing the logistics of larger quantities of uncoordinated goods can be minimised through working with local teams.

Lions meet with the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Leeds
Members of several Lions Clubs in the Leeds area were invited for afternoon tea with the Lord Mayor of Leeds Councillor Graham Latty and the Lady Mayoress Councillor Pat Latty at the Civic Hall in Leeds.
Members from Leeds, Leeds Skyrack, Garforth & District and Rothwell District Lions Clubs attended to hear the Lord Mayor share information about Just One Day! – an opportunity to support the Lord Mayor’s Charity.
This year the Lord Mayor is supporting St. Gemma’s Hospice. For more information:

St Gemma’s Barbecue -St Gemma’s Fun day
For many years members of the Leeds Lions Club have assisted St Gemma’s on their Summer Fete Fun day. On 7th July 2019 we once again supported St Gemma’s, by running the barbecue and the bar. Therefore 100% of the takings on the day go to St Gemma’s to allow them to provide care to their patients.
This year as well as members and friends we were joined by the President of Leeds Skyrack Lions Club, Robert Carter, who was cooking burgers and sausages.
Even if you do not want to be a member of the Leeds Lions Club we still are happy to have a band of willing helpers who assist us at larger events.
